The new year is always an exciting time for us, greeting us with feelings of ambition and the desire to achieve the best version of ourselves. But the new year also means it is time to shift gears. It seems like just yesterday we were harvesting grapes. After a brief hiatus during the holidays, we’re heading into the cellar to check in with the 2016 vintage which is heading down the home stretch. Our attention now gravitates towards blending and bottling, which is my favorite time of the year…and simultaneously my least favorite time of the year.
Blending trials for obvious reasons is something very enjoyable. Wine is often kept in individual lots until this point. Now is the time we begin putting the pieces of the puzzle together. No two barrels are the same, so finding the appropriate places for them can be a challenge. But that challenge is what makes this part of the process so exciting. It’s the time you finally get to see all of the forethought and hard work take shape. And it’s exhilarating when you get it right.
Bottling, which we will do for the 16’s sometime this spring, is a bit of a chore. It’s not my favorite day of the year – it’s not fun, it’s messy, busy, loud, and sometimes doesn’t go perfectly. Not to mention there is no turning back, and the reality of not being able to make any changes is nerve wracking. The final blend is often filled with ‘what if’s’. If nothing else, it’s a reminder to always go with your instincts. But the 2016 harvest is filled with promise, so I can’t wait to share them with you later in this year.
We also have lots of activities going on the first half of this year that we think you’ll enjoy. Everything from wine maker dinners, festivals and wine club events as described in the links below. If you have any questions regarding these events, don’t hesitate to reach out or stay tuned to your inbox and social media for further information or more details.
